there were some graphics this morning from "the washington post." the ban on assault weapons includes massachusetts, maryland, new york, and hawaii. 30 states require -- every port of the mental health of buyers -- require a report of the mental health of buyers. what do you make of the mental health requirements and awaiting periods? what about tightening those laws? guest: i think they will be on the table. there is probably a loophole in the system. on the concealed carry issue -- i do not own a gun. most people who have concealed carry gun permits use them responsibly. illinois is the 50th state. as a percentage of the population, the police officers who are trained are convicted of firearms violations at the same rate as the private citizens who carry concealed weapons and have permits. i do not think it is more unsafe to have private citizens protect us then to have the police protect us if the police cannot get their act in time. it doesn't take more than five minutes to shoot 20 people. you cannot get the police there in time. is somebody ha

we spend too much in washington. we at the reform and time programs to save and protect social security. those are the area of the budget that have to be restructured. perhaps even more important -- where is the president? he is out on the campaign trail. every day we are a little bit closer to the fiscal cliff. every day republicans are here, speaker boehner is here, leader mcconnell is here. ready for business, ready to do something that will avoid what everybody agrees would be a disaster and yet the president seems to be content with traveling of around the country, doing a victory lap or something when he should be here sitting across the table from the people who can help us avoid a bad situation for our country economically. mr. president, you said it. we agree with that. now let's get to work and try to fix it. >> for people who spent a lifetime building a small business, small communities have a florist or a cleaners, those businesses will be impacted. many of them will not be able to continue to hold that b

next, grover norquist was on this morning's "washington journal." this is 40 minutes. host: someone who's been in the news and on the news lately is on your screen now, grover norquist, president of americans for tax reform. mr. norquist, make your case for no tax increases at this point in our economic situation. guest: two years ago president obama extended all of the tax cuts that lapsed in janurary. he did so because he said the economy was weak and raising taxes ordered. the economy is not any stronger now than it was. in addition to the tax increase, he wants to impose by letting some of the bush tax cuts laps, he has already got a trillion dollars in tax increases that starting in january to pay for obamacare. when you think about fiscal cliff, the bush tax cuts have collapsed, sequestration cuts spending, and then there's a trillion dollar tax increase that obama has over the next decade to pay for obamacare. interestingly, he decided to delay those taxes until after he was reelected. but they start kicking in in january. very painful and hit the middle class h
